Beyond Charisma: Designing Music Classrooms for Equity and Understanding

Across schools, students encounter music teachers with a wide range of personalities and teaching styles. Some educators are energetic and extroverted, while others are calm and reserved. But all students deserve meaningful learning opportunities, regardless of who is on the podium or in front of the class. The challenge is ensuring that instruction does not rely solely on a teacher’s personal style, but instead reflects a clear, intentional design that prioritizes student understanding.

By using the National Core Arts Standards (NCAS) in combination with the Understanding by Design (UbD) framework, teachers can build music programs that focus on what students should know and be able to do. This approach supports equitable learning experiences by emphasizing clarity of purpose, consistency in expectations, and meaningful assessment across all types of classrooms.
