Music for All: Equality, Diversity and Inclusion
Droe, K. L. (2017). Music for All: Equality, Diversity and Inclusion. Iowa Music Educator, Fall/Winter, 8, 6.
This article from the Iowa Music Educator explores the concept of “Music for All” through the lenses of equality, diversity, and inclusion. Drawing on professional development experiences and examples from music educators across the country, it argues that expanding access to music education requires intentional changes in who participates and how programs are designed. The article highlights how equitable access leads to increased diversity, and how inclusive practices can better reflect the cultures and communities schools serve. It also addresses the reality that participation in music programs declines significantly at the secondary level, calling for a rethinking of offerings to reach more students. Ultimately, the article presents a vision of music education that moves beyond serving a select group to engaging all learners in meaningful musical experiences.
