Music education exists on a spectrum between two dominant approaches: the large ensemble model, which prioritizes structured, performance-based learning, and the individual development model, which emphasizes creativity, personal growth, and accessibility. This article explores the distinctions between these models across multiple dimensions, including teacher roles, student voice, inclusivity, curriculum design, and lifelong engagement with music. Large ensembles provide students with discipline, teamwork, and public performance opportunities, while individual development fosters self-expression, cultural relevance, and independent musicianship. By validating both ends of the spectrum, this article argues for a balanced approach in schools, ensuring that all students, regardless of background or learning style, can develop a meaningful and lifelong connection to music. A musically healthy society depends on embracing the full range of music education experiences.
