This article from the Iowa Music Educator reflects on how music education adapted during the COVID-19 pandemic and highlights unexpected areas of growth. It describes how virtual learning expanded access to professional development, increased collaboration through online platforms, and encouraged educators to explore new teaching approaches. Most notably, the shift away from traditional performance-based instruction opened space for greater student creativity, including music production, composition, and project-based learning. The article argues that these changes revealed overlooked dimensions of music education and challenges educators not to return to previous limitations, but to build on these innovations to create more inclusive, creative, and flexible music programs.
